State Director Update: After offering the opportunity for taking on the directorship to the members of Maine's science community, it appears that I will continue to man the helm for the near future. I will be seeking to organize a committee to support the organization and sponsorship of our tournaments.

I am anticipating that our Division B tournament will be held at the University of Maine, Orono, again next year, and that our Division C tournament will be held at the University of Southern Maine, Gorham.

I must thank David Sturm at UMO for running the MS tournament and Robert Sanford at USM for supporting our HS tournament.

CONGRATULATIONS TO MAINE'S 2011 SCIENCE OLYMPIAD CHAMPIONS!

Division B: Troy Howard Middle School, Belfast. Coached by Jacquie Kahn & Steve Groening

Division C: Mt. Ararat High School, Topsham. Coached by Glenn Evans, Jason Knight & Evelyn Barbour.

These two teams will compete at the National Tournament on Saturday, May 20th at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

There is a meeting of interested Middle School coaches on October 1st in Portland. We will be brainstorming about possible ways to run a small-sized tournament for a few interested schools. Email Carol for details.

Important Information about 2011 Tournaments

Dear Middle School Coaches,

Maine will NOT be holding a Division B tournament this year. Although I am sure the students had a wonderful experience the past three years, organizing, preparing for, and running the tournament is more than this State Director can manage. The High School Division C tournament will be held, so perhaps your area high schools would be interested in participating if they don't already.

At Waynflete, the MS students are going to have a science/engineering activity and mini-competitions using the types of building events that the Science Olympiad typically includes. That could be a good substitute for your students too.

I am hoping that this will be my last year as State Director (it has been very difficult to find people interested in taking on the responsibility or even finding volunteers to help), but when I do find a replacement, I will contact all of you with that information.

Now Taking Registrations for both the High School (Divison C) and Middle School (Division B) Maine Science Olympiad Tournaments. Both tournaments will likely be held in the Portland area. The tournaments are usually scheduled on a Saturday between the last week in February and the first week in April. Belfast's Troy Howard Middle School Wins First Place in Maine's Science Olympiad Tournament held on March 7th at the Waynflete School in Portland. Waynflete's MS team came in second place, and Bonny Eagle MS finished in third. New team Philip Sugg MS from Lisbon Falls came in a close fourth place. Congratulations to all of the students and coaches and thank you Waynflete for hosting this event for the second year!

Middle School: Saturday, March 7th 2009 at Waynflete School in Portland.

Locations of 2009 Division B and Division C Tournaments confirmed.
Although the dates of the tournaments are not quite settled on, the locations will once again be the Waynflete School in Portland for our Middle School (Division B) Tournament, and the University of Southern Maine in Gorham for our High School (Division C) Tournament.

The Middle School Tournament will run 16 events: Amphibians & Reptiles, Anatomy, Bio-Process Lab, Crave the Wave, Dynamic Planet, Ecology, Elevated Bridge, Fossils, Meteorology, Pentathon, Reach for the Stars, Road Scholar, Science Crime Busters, Scrambler, Trajectory, Wright Stuff.

The High School Tournament will run 23 events: Astronomy, Cell Biology, Chem Lab, Disease Detectives, Dynamic Planet, Ecology, Egg-O-Naut, Electric Vehicle, Elevated Bridge, Environmental Chemistry, Experimental Design, Forensics, Fossils, Health Science, Herpetology, It's About Time, Junkyard Challenge, Physics Lab, Picture This, Remote Sensing, Technical Problem Solving, Trajectory, Write It Do It.

NEW THIS YEAR! A Middle School Science Olympiad tournament. To be held at Waynflete School (Portland) in March of 2008. This tournament will consist of sixteen separate competitions. Registration for the 2008 High School Maine Science Olympiad is now available. The price is $150 per team. The tournament will be held in February or March 2008. Location not yet determined.

New this year: I am attempting to put together a small Middle School Science Olympiad. The tournament will consist of approximately 15 events, chosen from the National Events and Rules booklets. The price per team would be $150. The tournament will likely be held in Portland, Maine.

Maine Tournament on March 31st 2007 was a huge success. Over 200 high school students participated in the 23 events hosted by the University of Southern Maine.
